My New Favorite Charity -- Kiva

by Jillian Leslie on

A wonderful way to help others

I just went to a party, and on the invitation I was confronted with the "your presence is present enough" line, meaning no gifts.  However, in situations like this, I always bring a gift, because God-forbid I'm the only one who actually listens. But on this invitation, it said if you still want to buy something for the host, you could buy a gift certificate to Kiva. org, which I knew nothing about.   So I did some investigating.

It turns out Kiva is a micro-lending site, that lets you "lend money to a specific entrepreneur in the developing world -- empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty."  Already interesting, I thought.

What Not to Do When Throwing Your Daughter a Party...

by Jillian Leslie on

Here I am helping Lainey blow out her candles

Last weekend was my daughter's second birthday party.  We were going to do something mellow -- a picnic at the park with friends and family, no cooking, just takeout.   But it didn't end up exactly as mellow as I planned.

There was the issue of the picnic tables.  My nanny and I staked them out early in the morning.  But I hadn't officially reserved them and multiple parties were now arriving in need of a place to sit and my tables were the only ones in the "open" section.   And there was also the issue of picking up food but not wanting it to sit out too long, which meant spending the morning in my car going back and forth and back and forth from my house to the park.
