Party Recap

When my daughter approached me about wanting a Lego Friends birthday this year, I knew that this would be a fun opportunity to take a character concept and put my own unique spin on it. While my daughter loves building with Legos, she loves her sweet little friends even more. So, I thought this would be a neat opportunity to play up the friendship element of “Lego Friends”.

I enlisted the graphic design assistance of my good friend, Beth Kruse, from Beth Kruse Custom Creations. She is always so great about making sweet and unique graphics to help bring together really precious parties. Originally my daughter and I were toying with the concept of a “hearts and stars” themed birthday, so we kept these graphic elements with our Lego Friends party. And since butterflies are already a small design element in Lego Friends, we decided to add those too. Our girly color palette took an unconventional twist with patterned Lego blocks.

Our dessert table was set off with a large poster that defined our concept – “Friends Are All A Girl Needs”. The backdrop was made from bold, solid colored square and round paper plates to coordinate with our color scheme. A few paper rosettes with our heart, star and butterfly images helped
frame and fill in our backdrop.

Cupcakes were our main dessert since they’re easy to hand out and manage and since this was a REAL party for 20 girls, we were all about ease. Half of our cupcakes had chocolate Lego blocks and half were adorned with adorable paper cupcake toppers. I had a small smash-cake-sized cake made specifically for my daughter to blow out candles. I created a custom cake topper and this sweet petite cake became the centerpiece to our table.

NatSweets created the most amazing hand painted Lego Friends cookie pops with the faces of the actual Lego Friends characters. This was the only character element we used in the party, and they were outstanding!

Natasha is truly an artist. The main attraction at our dessert table were candy dishes that spelled out “FRIENDS”. These took up almost the entire width of the table and were filled with color coordinating Sixlets. Jelly beans or M&M’s would have worked well in these dishes too. Butterfly candy kabobs and more boutique cookies were the finishing touches to our precious sweets table.

Activities for our Lego Friends party were friendship focused. We had my kids’ babysitter, who is also a teacher, come in and do a little activity and discussion about what makes a good friend. Following that, we had the girls put their finger prints on a “friendship tree” that everyone got to take home at the end. The big activity, however, was something I worked long and hard to organize. I had asked all the Moms in the invitation to email me a photo of their child showing her personality.

Beth Kruse helped me create a photo collage of all the girls together with the title “Friends – Are All A Girl Needs”. From there, I spray painted dollar store frames and gave the girls a cup full of jewels and glue and let them bejewel their frames. The girls got to take these friendship collages home to put in their own bedrooms. They loved them!

Friendship is a pretty special thing. Legos are too. Combining them is magical. This 7th birthday will be one that I will remember for a long time, and I think my daughter will too.
