Party Recap

Maybe you are more charitable towards snakes than I am, but I am not a fan. However, my gorgeous son Will and his big brother Tom have long been fascinated by snakes. So, yes, we have a ball python, and the boys think he is seriously ‘cute’. Not the first word I would use to describe the ‘pet’, but each to their own.
My William wanted a ‘Snake Party’ this year. Let me tell you, it was a blast – so easy to organize, so visually effective and so much fun for the kids. It makes a difference to have a vibrant, un-fussy, un-complicated party sometimes.

Don’t you just love the fresh, green, jungley look? You can’t go wrong – the impact is huge and the plants do most of your decor work for you!
We designed a snake party with a more natural edge by evening all the elements a watercolor look so it takes the harsh scary edge off the snake vibe.
The key to this is…drum roll….plants! Green plants. You need to create a jungle! Have you got loads of plants in pots in your house? In your garden? In your friend’s gardens? Then, bring those gorgeous pops of green over to the party table set up. We also got some fake ivy from the dollar store which was really effective draped across the front of the table, especially against the background of our black tablecloth.
Need a snake cake? No worries! See how delicious looking and snakey this one is? The cake itself looks like a log – so, make a nice round cake! Do your kids love chocolate? Mine too. Then, cover the sides in thick, delicious chocolate icing and make striations up the sides of the cake to mimic the log.
There are two ways to get these gorgeous, brightly colored snakes topper on your cake. You can make them with fondant icing. OR, just as effective, and less time consuming is to pop to the dollar store and grab some nice, brightly colored (to suit your theme) plastic snakes to grace the cake log. Your call! Your snakes can slither on top of the cake, down the sides or around the base, the choice is yours and you can add as little or as much to it as you want.
To bring on the bright colors, it should be easy enough to find brightly colored sweets in the party colors (ours were primarily green and yellow) and put them in interesting clear containers so you can see the colors of the candy inside. Then, have some fun giving them names and using the editable food labels to label them and add some cool detail to the theme.
And while you’re at it, any logs lying around in your woodpile? Bring ’em on over to the table, along with some sticks and kindling. It all helps create the perfect tropical snake environment. Rocks work too. This is a really easy, inexpensive party to create.
We thought you might like this idea – muffins decorated with snake cupcake toppers and wrappers, instead of iced cupcakes. They look just as good, taste great, and keep that sugar content down a little. Every win is a win!
Overall, it really is delightfully easy to create this party. Find some plastic skulls if you can, for snakes to hide in, and to add height to your dessert table or any part of the party by stringing and stapling your greenery. Oh, and something I have learned over all the years of throwing parties for my kids – keep your ‘pretty’ dessert table small. It is easier to manage and looks great in photos. It looks even better if you create interest on your dessert table with different heights – using cake stands, boxes and different items!
Oh yes, another thing about this party is that, if you go and get a bunch of dollar store plastic snakes, or if your munchkin already has lots of them in his toybox, you can use them all over the party for fun detail – peering around your sweet jars, crawling on the tables and around the juice (we called ours swamp slime, check out the cute label.)
Now, for one of my BEST details about the snake party. The Party Favor! It was a perfect opportunity to create a matching party-themed snakes and ladders game. You have to agree with me, this game NEVER gets old! Delight each little reptile with his or her own snakes and ladders party favor – complete with editable favor topper and handy color sheet printables so you can punch or cut tokens in different colors. Hours of fun, and another strike on the sugar front – a party favor that does not involve sweets! Yippeeeee! https://bit.ly/3Dnn2bC

When it came to entertainment, Will and his friends were happy just slithering around playing and eating loads! But you could always call in a snake or reptile handler to show some of the ‘fascinating’ creatures and let the brave kids touch them. Have fun and be brave!
