Party Recap

Watch out – Here come the Minions! Everyone in my house couldn’t wait for the new Despicable Me 3 movie to come out, so much so that my son decided the week before his birthday that he was going to have a Despicable Me themed party. There were so many Minions party ideas on Pinterest that I wanted to try, but a lot of them were out of our budget or were way too elaborate for a 6-year-old. We found a lot of really great Despicable Me party supplies at Michaels or online, which was convenient for throwing this party together quick! Having a big display table was a must for us, so we picked up lots of Minions themed party table decorations to make it look extra fun and crazy, just like Gru’s mischievous yellow henchmen! I used a Despicable Me tablecloth to give the table some color and then put all the other décor on top. Then I put the big Minions birthday cake right in the center for all eyes to see! We also put up a bright and colorful Despicable Me door poster to go on the front door, which the kids loved seeing when they walked up the front porch. I also wanted to make sure we had plenty of entertainment for our mini Minion guests, so we came up with some pretty cute and fun Despicable Me party ideas for kids games and activities. My husband even took on a few DIY Minions party projects for us, too. And of course, everybody left with a Minions goodie bag full of treats :)

Party Highlights

  • What People Ate

With the dining room table completely set with Minions paper plates, napkins, and cups, there were little yellow henchmen everywhere you looked. Lucky for us, our son loves the Minions (maybe even more than Gru!) so he and his friends sat down and put on their Minions party hats while they waited for the food to be ready - Minions hamburgers, hot dogs, and little Minion tots! I drew goggles on the hamburger buns with edible ink marker, and for the hot dogs I used ketchup and mustard to make faces directly on the franks. Funny enough, before planning this party I never realized how much classic tater tots looked just like Minions. Maybe I’m becoming an evil genius.

  • What People Drank

There can’t be an easier Minions drink to make than lemonade… besides maybe blue fruit punch. So we had BOTH!

  • Desserts

When you go on Pinterest it seems like there’s no shortage of fun Minions-themed desserts to make. We had the bakers at our local shop create a cake just for our bash and we took care of the rest! Our dessert table had cupcakes with yellow icing, trail mix with blue and yellow M&Ms, and even rice crispy treats with dipped-on overalls. My best work yet! Needless to say, our minions were sufficiently sugared up.

  • Party Favors

There were tons of Minions party favors to choose from at Walmart, so I had to pick the ones I liked the most. Lucky for me, the Minions favor bags I found were big enough to fit all my favorites with some candy too. Each bag got a bubble wand, a bouncy ball, pencils, and a set of paper goggles. This Minions mom was all set!

  • Activities / Games

The birthday boy has been watching the trailer for Despicable Me 3 non-stop and it gave me a few ideas. We bought a set of Minions tattoos so everybody could reenact their favorite scene from the trailer. Huge hit! Not long after, we got the kids together to play musical chairs. Me and Balthazar Bratt actually have the same taste in music, so I played my favorite songs from the 80s while everyone ran around in circles trying to find a seat. It was so fun and easy. Later on, it was pinata time. I bought a pull-string style Minions pinata for the kids to play with, and everyone had a blast breaking it open. At one point, a couple mischief makers (in true Minions fashion) opened their favor bags early and found their paper goggles. Not to worry, I lined everyone up and took pictures. We have a polaroid so we could give each of the boys a photo to take. When the parents showed up, the pictures made a great finishing touch to everyone’s favor bags.
