Sam's Dragon 5th Birthday Party

This party was a lot of fun. Sam was very into dragons at the time, so the theme was easy to pick. Once the illustrations and color scheme were designed, everything came together pretty quickly. My husband built a wooden circle backdrop for behind the desert table, and I created a balloon installation to hang from it. The focal point of the dessert table was the cake, of course. It was so fun to make with the "dragon scales" frosting pattern. There were also cupcakes, orange soda in bottles with fire stickers (which the kids decided was "dragon's breath) and dragon scale cookies.

I think the dining tables were my favorite part of the set up. We used the party favors as centerpieces. Each child got a "dragon egg" - a large easter egg, covered with paper scales, and filled with a pair of dragon wings. The kids had a lot of fun with the wings. I wish I had more photos! We also got the most adorable plates from Oh Happy Day . The silver, shield-shapped ones were so perfect.. And each cup had a blue rock candy stick inside to add to the mythical dragon theme.

The party was in July, so we served hotdogs, mac and cheese, watermelon, and raw veggies + dip. I'm not a fan of super-structured activities at parties. The kids all ran around and played in their dragon wings, jumped on the trampoline outside and just did their loud and noisy kid thing! We finally rounded them up for presents, birthday cake, and the grand finale - the piñata. My kids always insist on a piñata at parties and I'm always nervous my DIY piñata will break too soon or not at all. (The latter has happened more than once.) But this one was perfect! Paper mâché for the win.
