Party Recap

I decided on an Olaf Summer Luau as a theme since our daughter was turning 4 and wanted a "Frozen" birthday party. I found a basic summer Olaf printable party set on Etsy and built the entire theme around Olaf in summer at a Luau. I found most of the luau party decorations, table wear, party favors and leis at our local Dollar Tree store which kept this party very budget friendly.

I made the cut out Olaf myself by blowing up a free "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" printable into sections and pasting it on foam core board and then cutting it out. I added a lei and like Frosty he came to life. We posed him in front of a bright palm tree backdrop against the fence so everyone could take funny photos with him. I also made a luau directional sign from cardboard, neon poster board, dollar store decorations, paint and a bamboo reed. This was an easy, fun, and inexpensive project with a big impact.

The luau table was set inside buffet style with lots of food on brightly colored serving dishes and surfboards. Olaf food tents were printed with the name of each dish such as "Hula Ham Kabobs" and "Maui Wowi Rice". I made a plate of cute flip flop cookies from Nutter Butters and icing placing them on top of a brown sugar beach. The cupcakes were decorated with plain vanilla butter cream frosting and a fine graham cracker crumb topping (to look like sand). I then printed and cut out Olaf decorations and hot glued them onto paper drink umbrella toothpicks and stuck them into the cupcakes. A basic wire cupcake stand was revamped by adding a hula skirt and a Disney Frozen Olaf bobble head. We also served mini ice-cream sundae cups disguised as "Melting Olafs".

Our backyard was transformed into a tropical paradise. We put up a pop up gazebo and made a birthday Tiki hut for the kids which offered a shady eating area. I wrapped lei garland around umbrella stands and draped the patio chairs with leis for the guests. I added an Olaf face to a Tiki totem pole decoration and nailed it to our big tree. Other luau decorations and signs were sprinkled around the yard as well as paper lanterns and a big birthday banner. I also hung kitschy inflatable monkeys and tucans from the tree.

You can't have a luau without a Tiki bar so we constructed one out of a small umbrella table and two raffia grass table skirts. We served two types of punches out of drink dispensers a kid friendly blue hawaiian punch and a rum punch for the adults. We also stocked the bar with bottled water and other refreshments. Bar accoutrements included a whole fresh pineapple and plastic coconut cups. Bright plastic Tiki cups were filled with fun pink flamingo and parasol straws as well as palm tree and flamingo drink stirrers and paper drink umbrella picks. Fresh fruit slices and mint was offered for drink garnishes.

Besides the Olaf beach shoot we had a Tiki beanbag toss game, hula hoops, and a ring toss game for guests to entertain themselves. I handed out dollar store pineapple sippy cups, with a pink flamingo toy, and sunglasses as a party favor for the kids. The little girls were also given hula skirts to wear and all the guests received a lei to keep it very festive. Myself and my daughter also wore hula skirts and accessories. We had a surprise visit from Olaf himself decked out in a hula skirt, lei and black Ray Bans. This was an awesome party to organize and host. Our guests were delighted with all the details, the food was amazing (thanks to my hubby), the drinks were flowing and everyone had a great time. But best of all was the smile on our daughter's face all day long.
