Party Recap

Hi folks! I'm so excited to share details about my son's 6th birthday party. Several months prior to the party, I asked him what theme he wanted this year and he said without hesitation, 'CHESS'. I didn't believe him so I asked three weeks later and then another three weeks with the same response. So, finding out how to do a chess party and make it fun for 6 and 7 year olds was my next mission. Challenge accepted.

It's summer in Houston and I wanted to take advantage of the season and have water involved so I thought it would be cool to smashup splashpad and chess themes. I mean, who doesn't love to play games poolside? We settled on Noah's Ark Splash Pad at the Quillian Center which can hold a large group, has a ton of shaded area, and lots of space to set up multiple chess game stations.

Pulling it all together was rather easy. After searching online for chess themed parties, I settled on creating a chess board display using cupcakes. I bought the cupcakes, vanilla and chocolate, and cake from my favorite grocery store HEB. I also made the chess pieces cupcake toppers using candy melts and chess pieces mold. The mold only created half of the chess piece so placing the halves together was the only time consuming task. I used a 3x5 black and white lawn chess mat for the board which worked out perfectly. To finish out the display, we had a banner wishing Happy Birthday to the birthday boy. The kids were absolutely delighted when they saw the cupcakes. We rounded out the event with a picture frame with the hashtag 'carterschessparty' on the bottom. The banner, lawn chess game, chess pieces mold, cake topper, and picture frame were all purchased on Amazon. Overall, a really special day for my special little guy.
