Party Recap

My daughter Christina loves reading! She asked me if she could have a Reading Party for her 8th Birthday and I said, “Can you come up with something more fun for a party?” She responded, “What’s more fun than reading?” I shrugged my shoulders and started working on a creative twist to create a party with a focus on reading. Instead of a Reading Party, I called it a Book Fair to make it more whimsical.

Party Highlights

  • What People Ate

To add the Book “Fair” element food consisted of cotton candy pops and popcorn. We also had sandwiches, veggie wraps, fruit, and chips.

  • What People Drank

I created a signature drink for the readers “SMARTIE PUNCH” consisting of fruit punch, sprite, and Smartie candies. I made a special version for the adults called “SPIKED SMARTIE PUNCH” with vodka.

  • Desserts

My daughter surprised me and she didn’t want a birthday cake instead she requested sugar cookies and mini sprinkle cupcakes from S’mores Minis.

  • Party Favors

The activities served as party favors along with T-shirts, pretend reading glasses, Velcro ‘brainstorming’ bows, and tiny treat bags filled with Smartie candies, a tiny notebook, and mini pencil.

  • Activities / Games

For months, I grabbed clearance items for Back-to-School supplies such as colored pencils, crayons, rulers, etc and any holiday clearance items from Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter that related to reading, coloring, or writing. I created stations for the readers which consisted of writing a book, designing a journal cover, decorating a book bag, making “Book Worm” skewers with gummy worms, and creating book marks. The party was held at the local book store Fox Tale Book Shoppe and guests had the option to get books from the bookstore. Guests were asked to donate their old books to the Atlanta Children’s Shelter. We also had a 3 foot piñata, dance party with prizes, face painting, and balloons.
