Party Recap

It is true!! Alice in Wonderland is one of our favorite themes for parties, and not only!!

When my dearest client Tania requested a twisted, creative, and unique fairy tale theme for the baptism party of her daughter, I was more than excited and up for the challenge to design an unforgettable event that would leave her guests with a WOW feeling. And of course, an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party was the perfect theme for me to create a “MADNESS” magical scenery!

I drew inspiration from the original book of Lewis Carroll, which has some beautiful illustrations by John Tenniel, and the recent Tim Burton movie, with a more fantastical and surreal style and slightly more muted pastel tones.

1. The Ceremony

Appropriately respectful of the event it honors and the outdoor space of the church, I wanted to create a minimal “Down to the rabbit hole” entrance. We used a black metal arch and decorated it with ivy greenery, hanging hand-painted (this way - that way) signs, and a few “Alice in Wonderland” quotes printed in playing cards symbols. On both sides of the arch, we used on the ground moss to create an earthy aesthetic and placed above paper “Alice in Wonderland” prop signs and “drink me” little bottles. We highlighted the churches’ entrance with a vintage red standing clock and a unique rabbit pot filled with fern. Finally, to complete the scenery, I painted an old wooden bedside table with blackboard paint, and with white chalk, I drew unspecified rhombus and rectangles to create an abyss illusion.

2. The ‟Tea Party” Venue

- The Tea Party Dessert Table

The outdoor venue with a secret garden feel, the tiled path, and the gorgeous big tree on the right was the perfect place for the magical tea party to take place. The idea was to create a similar, as possible, tea party table as in the Tim Burton movie. So, we used three tables lined up in the same way as in the film and clothed them with white granny tablecloths. As I planned and designed a more realistic tea party dessert table than a typical candy table, we served only tea and different kinds of delicious desserts. Cupcakes, meringue, “eat me” macaroons, pâte à choux, red velvet cakes, mosaic cakes, carrot cakes, small chocolate cakes, cheesecake and caramel shots, and tiny tarts were the hit of the day!

What we truly love about an “Alice in Wonderland” themed party is that you can be creative in many ways! The more you mismatch shapes and colors, the better surreal style you create. Teacups and teapots, chairs, clocks, old books, beautiful flower bouquets, all were mismatched to make it feel childlike and magical, like out of a fairy tale. Definitely, the red “throne” chair was the WOW factor and highlight of the tea-table setting! As background, we used oversized decorative “Alice in Wonderland” props, and of course, we could not miss the flamingos from such a setting!

- The Guest Favors Table

That beautiful tree was the perfect spot to set the guest favors table. We hanged from its branches torn floral fabrics, teapots, teacups, clocks, old books and created the perfect background for our themed table! The black wooden console with its cute little drawer shined as a statement-making display adding a timeless aesthetic to our setup. All guest favors were hand-made. We created handkerchiefs with mismatched floral fabrics, playing cards symbol fabric, a wonderful “Alice in Wonderland” figurine fabric, and tied up theme relevant metal elements like clocks, scissors, and mirrors.

- The Baptismal Set

The baptismal set, custom-made for our little Myrto, was hand-made and hand-painted using elements from her beautiful “Alice in Wonderland” invitation, giving a more childish tone with light tones of bright green, pink, red, and gold.
