Party Recap
We just celebrated our first child’s first birthday. It is crazy how fast time flies. We decided to go with an Indian Pow Wow theme for a few reasons:
ONE, we LOVE the idea of having an indoor teepee for Cedric and future children to be able to play in and make into forts, and that is a huge part of an Indian Pow Wow party decor.
TWO, Justin and I have a liking to Native American culture and the traditions and objects that come with it.
And THIRD, in liking this theme I wanted to have all the party decorations transferable into his toddler bedroom. I tried to promise myself I wouldn’t go all out for a one-year-old birthday party, but this way I was justifying doing a lot of DIY and decorations. In the end they would be used again for his room… so take that brain!
My mom and I are very hands-on, do-it-your-self artistic types, so it was inevitable that we would want to do everything we found on Pinterest and then some. It is incredible how much you can do with a few craft items and hours of work ;).
We are homemade-food-makers so we tried to do a lot of the food from scratch.. of course for a full party we didn’t have time to cook everything, but most we did. We had: fruit kabobs with hot glued feathers at the ends of the sticks to look like arrows, mini chicken kabobs, chile reano, large Caesar salad, little veggie cups with ranch dressing on the bottom, and Pb&j sandwiches cut into triangles to look like teepees.
We had a huge dessert table of chocolate covered pretzel teepees ontop the cupcakes, mini donuts and brownie bites, and my favorite was the popcorn bar station. We added peanut m&ms, gummy bears, candy corn, honey roasted peanuts, pretzels, and raisins.
The smash cake was an original recipe that is a sugar-free, gluten-free Flourless Chocolate Cake (http://www.familyaswego.com/recipe/flourless-chocolate-cake/) After baking I used a small cup to punch out cake layers. I stacked the cake 5 layers high to give a cute “kid sized” look to it. I mixed organic greek yogurt, sunflower butter, and stevia to taste for the frosting.
We did LOTS of DIY work. We made: home made dreamcatchers, cut out LOTS of construction paper arrows, feathers, and garlands, felt arrow sticks, stick teepees, chalk board first year facts and stats, and a huge monthly picture board.
There were not many young children at the party since Cedric is only one, so I wanted to have activities that all ages would enjoy. We set up a rock decorating station and a feather headband station.
