The 54-day Rosary Novena originated in the late 19th century in Naples, Italy, when Our Lady of Pompeii appeared to an ill child who was fervently praying the Rosary requesting to be cured of an incurable disease. Our Lady asked her to pray three novenas. Shortly after, she was cured. Our Lady appeared a second time, saying: 'Whosoever desires to obtain favors from me should make 3 novenas of the prayers of the Rosary in petition, and three novenas in thanksgiving.'
